Welcome Center

The Welcome Center assists new, returning and continuing students with navigating the college. We serve new and returning students through the matriculation process (orientation, assessment, counseling, registration) as well as continuing students who are looking for more information on how to access services needed to be successful in college." Add Assessment Services, Prerequisites and Priority Enrollment Program (PEP) as subheadings. PEP info: Priority Enrollment Program (PEP) is designed to guide new students through Assessment, Orientation, Counseling and prepare them to register for classes. PEP Workshops are scheduled at High schools, on campus and via zoom. During registration periods, PEP workshops are combined with Registration workshops, so students can complete all enrollment steps in one day. For more information, please visit the Welcome Center website.

Assessment Services

CSM Assessment Services conducts the college assessment program which includes English, Reading, ESL, and Mathematics assessment components. Assessment Services no longer utilizes placement tests for English and Math placement due to the Passage of Assembly Bill (AB) 705. AB 705 allows students to be placed into transfer-level English and math courses using multiple measurements, which include external exams, high school GPA and coursework, guided self-placement. The goal of AB 705 is to maximize the probability that a student will enter and complete transfer-level coursework in English and math within the first year at CSM.

Students are advised to discuss course placement results with a counselor so that they can assist with the development of a student educational plan (SEP). There are a variety of other assessments such as AP, SAT, ACT that can be used as well. For more information, visit Assessment Services.

For English as a Second Language (ESL) there is computerized testing. To take a computerized assessment test, schedule an assessment appointment or call (650) 574-6175.
