Course Description

This course is designed to improve students’ written communication skills mostly at the paragraph and sentence level with a brief introduction to essay writing. It is the first in a series of three academically-focused writing courses meant to prepare students whose primary language is not English for success in ENGL C1000/ C1000E (formerly ENGL 100/105). Specifically, in this grammar-intensive course, students are taught to write effective academic paragraphs using intermediate-level grammar structures and a recursive writing process that emphasizes revision and proofreading. Students are also introduced to writing a basic essay and analyzing culturally-relevant readings. Readings, homework assignments, and class activities ask students to reflect on their personal experiences in relation to larger social, cultural, and economic issues.
